Grave Vincent van Gogh, 1852

ABOUT THE “VAN GOGH CHURCH ZUNDERT” , ALSO CALLED THE PROTESTANT CHURCH, CEMETERY (GRAVE VINCENT, 1852) A PLACE WHICH REMINDS VINCENT OF THE STORY OF THE RESURRECTION.

Here lies Van Gogh. Being here reminds you to look up from the plaque and see with Vincent’s eyes. Because he was here too, visiting a dying family friend. On a Saturday evening in April 1877, Vincent takes the last train to Oudenbosch and walks from here to Zundert.

In the dark of night, he marvels at the heath, the pine woods, and the marshes covered by stars. Vincent arrives at this cemetery. He writes,’ It was so quiet, I waited for the sun to rise.’ Everything in that moment reminds him of the story of the Resurrection.

This place had been mentioned in Van Gogh’s letter on 7-8 February 1877 (starlings on the roof of church), on 8 April 1877 (return to Zundert, cemetery, sexton’s house), on 12 June 1877, on 3 August 1877 & on 22 July 1878 (visit with dad).

There is a sketch exhibited in the Van Gogh Museum - Little Church (from a sketchbook for Betsy Tersteeg), 1873-1874, Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, The heritage site is located in Van Goghplein, 4881 DA Zundert, in Brabant, the Netherlands.
