The sexton’s house

ABOUT THE “SEXTON’S HOUSE ZUNDERT”WHICH WAS ACQUIRED AND RESTORED BY VINCENT’S FATHER IN 1863/1864. IT IS NOW USED FOR THE ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM TO SHARE ART INSPIRED BY VINCENT.

The word “Sexton” is derived from the Latin word “sacristanus” which means, “someone who looks after the sacred objects”. Reformed community of Zundert to buy the place. The sexton’s house was acquired and restored by Vincent’s father in 1863/1864. He collected sixty guilders from his constituents and added ten of his own. With this budget, he could fix and rebuild it as a sexton’s house.

This place was in the drawing in the sketchbook for Betsy Tersteeg (from memory), 1873-1874 This place had been mentioned in Van Gogh’s letter on 8 April 1877 (return to Zundert, sexton Aertsen is dying). The heritage site is located in Sint Elisabethlaan 1, 4881 DA Zundert, in Brabant, the Netherlands, Now the heritage is restored, well-maintained and there is a new studio next to the sexton’s house for the Van Gogh Gallery & Guest Studio Foundation to use for Artist-in-Residence program.
