When Vincent lies ill in Arles, he dreams of this, his house of birth in Zundert. He tells his brother how he ‘sees each room, each path, each plant in the garden, the views roundabout, the fields, the neighbors, the cemetery, the church, our kitchen garden behind, right up to the magpies’ nest in a tall acacia in the cemetery.’
These are the early years he so fondly remembers. His foundation. The protestant family. The farmer’s village. The vast stretches of nature; tamed and wild. They nested in his soul and would become his signature themes and obsessions.
This place had been mentioned in Van Gogh’s letter on 22 January 1889 (dream of house Zundert during illness), on 16 March 1877 (prints in father’s study) and on 21 April 1876 (sand castle in the garden).
The heritage site is located in Markt 26, 4881 CN Zundert, Lot Markt 26 (incl. garden), well (not the building from 1904), memorial stone in Brabant, the Netherlands.
