Born in Hong Kong, graduated from Canadian University in Visual Arts, Animation, and Photography. Step C. took Multimedia Animation and Art and Illustration courses in Hong Kong, France, and New York. Currently, she is teaching animation and design in the Design Department of the Polytechnic University of Hong Kong, and she enjoys spending the rest of her time drawing and creating.


出生于香港,毕业于加拿大大学视觉艺术、动画和摄影专业,并曾在香港、法国和纽约修读多媒体动画艺术和插画课程。目前在香港理工大学设计系任教动画与设计,其余时间喜欢绘画和创作。


Depths of Night

《极夜》


Step C was depressed in 2019. She watches the daily news about the epidemic, social turmoil, and conflict. So, she made this animation, hoping it would cure her spirit while also bringing a little warmth to society or giving people an unseen embrace.


张小踏在2019年的时候,感到非常抑郁。每天看着电视播报的新闻都围绕疫情、社会动荡、战争。所以她创作了这部动画,一方面能够治愈自己的心灵,另一方面能够带个这个社会一点温暖或者带给人一个无形的拥抱。

She uses animation to convey some of the worries that individuals have: Fear of being ostracized by peers, dread of losing family members’ love, and the fear of failing to take excellent care of those you love. The characters in this animation represent the stresses and worries that Step was terrified of at various ages. These are the pressures and concerns that everyone feels at multiple times. She portrays terror as a bodily absence.


透过动画的方式呈现了人们心中的一些惧怕。害怕收到同僚排挤的眼光;害怕失去家人的关爱;害怕照顾不好身边的爱的人。这些都是每个人在不同年纪所经历的恐惧和压力,而这个动画里的角色讲述的正正就是张小踏自己在不同年纪时所惧怕的。她利用身体上的缺失来象征恐惧。




When we were children, having our family around was an essential thing. The little girl felt so empty since she didn’t feel loved by her family. The tiny girl’s chest is therefore gone.


年幼的我们,最重要的就是家人的陪伴。小女孩缺乏来自家人的关爱,使她心里感到无比的空虚。所以,小女孩缺失了她的胸口。




Young people, your confidants are the ones who accompany you the most, aside from your family. You are conscious of your peers’ gazes on campus or just entering the job. Is it possible that I’m not attractive enough? Is there no one else who is intelligent and capable? Are they talking about how I look? I frequently wonder if I am worse than others. Thus, the little girl loses her face.


年轻人,陪伴你最多的除了家人,就是三五知己。无论是在校园还是刚刚步入职场,都非常介意来自同僚的目光。我是不是不够好看?是不是没有别人聪明能干?他们在讨论我的样子吗?常常质疑自己是不是比别的人差,所以青年的少女失去的是脸庞。




In middle age, there are old and young in the family, and the pressure during this time can be said to be like a thousand tons of weight on the body. As a caregiver at home, I try my best to care for every family member and friend around me daily. So, who will take care of or care for themselves?


到了而立的年纪,上有老下有小的,这段时间压力可以说好比千吨重压在身上。身为家里的照顾者,每天忙忙碌碌的想尽办法照顾好身边的每一位家人和朋友。那么,谁又来照顾或关心自己?


When we become older, we get concerned again; what are we concerned about? Is it the departure of family members and friends? or……


到了年迈时,我们又在担心着,恐惧着什么?是亲朋好友的离去?还是··········



Although the pain and darkness may seem endless, one day, it will end.


虽然痛苦与黑暗看似永无止境,但总有一天还是会走到终点。

《脉》


Step started to set foot in a new field and tried to make NFT art.


张小踏开始涉足新的领域,尝试制作NFT艺术。



“These antiques are the hard work of ancient artists. Although we cannot possibly know them, it appears that this time, we are collaborating with them to create new masterpieces. We’ll ponder what they were contemplating at the moment.” 


“这些古董都是古代艺术家的心血,我们没可能认识他们,但这次创作又好像与他们合作做新作品,会代入去想他们当时想怎么?”

Young people nowadays seldom get the chance to learn about certain historical Chinese artifacts. It is much more challenging to comprehend antiques when the epidemic of recent years is added in.


现在的年轻人本身就很少有机会能够了解到中国古代的一些器具,再加上这几年的疫情,想要对古董有了解那更是难上加难了。


Ming Dynasty Red Sandalwood Flowing Cloud Hand Pillow

明代紫檀流云手枕



The white marble sculptures from the Ming Dynasty in the Forbidden Cityand the royal lacquerware share similarities with the engraving and form of the cloud pattern on the red sandalwood flowing cloud cushion. The red sandalwood Liuyun hand pillow in the Ming Dynasty was a device used by traditional Chinese medicine practitioners to measure the pulse.


故宫的明代汉白玉雕塑和皇家漆器与紫檀流云垫上的云纹的雕刻和形式有相似之处。明代紫檀流云手枕是中医师用来把脉的器具。


In traditional Chinese medicine, the pulse must always be taken before diagnosing. You can see into a person’s entire being if you can see through their “pulse.” Like a pulse, antiques are handed on from one generation to the next. The two selves in the artwork observe one another as though they can see one other through the pulse.


在传统中医中,必须在作出诊断之前先量脉。如果你能看透一个人的“脉搏”,你就能看透一个人的整个生命。与脉相似,古董是从一代传到下一代的。作品中的两个自我正在互相观察,仿佛他们可以通过脉搏看到另一个自我。




The shape in the center represents the sign that unites them. Several blood veins are going through them, and light is around them, symbolizing an enigmatic force. The light in the center also represents infinite life by reflecting the continuous blood circulation in the human body.


将她们结合在一起的符号由中心的形状表示。几条血脉在她们身上穿行,周围有一道光,象征着一股神秘的力量。中心的光也反映了人体血液的不断循环,代表着无限的生命。


The younger generation may learn more about history and culture through the utilization of antiques and NFT art. The animation’s abstraction gradually reveals that the antique is more than simply a chilly piece of wood or iron. Artists like creating new narratives about themselves to draw in more viewers interested in learning more about the underlying historical records. Let the audience for those who like antiques include both older and younger people.


古董与加密艺术的结合,使年轻一辈更多的去了解到历史文化。透过动画的抽象展现的方式,是古董不只是一块冰冷的木头或铁块。艺术家就像赋予了它们新的故事,再透过新的故事去吸引更多的人想要深入了解背后原有的历史故事。让欣赏古董的受众不止于在年长的人群,扩大至更年轻的我们。
