ABOUT THE “PROTESTANT CHURCH MUNICIPALITY NUENEN” WHERE VAN GOGH'S FATHER. THEODORUS. PREACHED. THIS PAINTING COMMEMORATED HIS DEATH IN 1885 AND WAS A GIFT FROM VINCENT TO HIS SICKLY MOTHER.

This place carries some emotional weight. Protestant church municipality Nuenen is an important and mark in this beautiful village. When Vincent arrived in Nuenen in December 1883. he almost immediately started working on a painting of it - as a gift to his sickly mother.

He reworked that same painting before leaving shortly after his father died in 1885. It is the church his father Theodorus, preached in. As a gift, it also commemorates his death. Working on it bookends Vincent's final vears in Brabant.

This place had been mentioned in Van Gogh's letter on 3 February 1884 (painting for his mother), and the sketch-Vincent van Gogh "Church in Nuenen" 1884 is now exhibited in the Kröller-Müller Museum,Otterlo(F117) and the master painting is now exhibited in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

A fun fact to know is this painting was stolen from the Van Gogh Museum in December 2002 and recovered inItaly in September 2016. There is a street named after it in the town, as well as a cafe college, and bar. A statue of Van Gogh is located in the central part of the town. The heritage site is located in Papenvoort 2a, 5671 CR Nuenen, in Brabant the Netherlands.
