With the advent of technology, art has transcended to new forms. Artists are now looking towards digital art, NFTs, VR\/AR, and the metaverse, creating more immersive worlds to be experienced. But beyond hype and enthusiasm surrounding these new technologies, what is a metaverse and why should artists even care about it?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u968f\u7740\u6280\u672f\u7684\u51fa\u73b0\uff0c\u827a\u672f\u5df2\u7ecf\u53d1\u5c55\u51fa\u65b0\u7684\u5f62\u5f0f\u3002\u827a\u672f\u5bb6\u4eec\u73b0\u5728\u6b63\u5728\u5173\u6ce8\u6570\u5b57\u827a\u672f\u3001NFT\u3001VR\/AR \u548c\u865a\u62df\u4e16\u754c\uff0c\u4ee5\u521b\u9020\u66f4\u52a0\u8eab\u4e34\u5176\u5883\u7684\u4e16\u754c\u4ee5\u4f9b\u4f53\u9a8c\u3002\u4f46\u9664\u4e86\u56f4\u7ed5\u8fd9\u4e9b\u65b0\u6280\u672f\u7684\u7092\u4f5c\u548c\u70ed\u60c5\u4e4b\u5916\uff0c\u7a76\u7adf\u4ec0\u4e48\u662f\u5143\u5b87\u5b99\uff0c\u827a\u672f\u5bb6\u4e3a\u4ec0\u4e48\u5982\u6b64\u5173\u6ce8\u5b83\uff1f<\/span><\/p>\n

Put simply, the metaverse is a virtual space in which people can interact, trade, and create digital assets such as 3D designs, digital fashion, as well as NFTs. Unlike what many people assume, it is not created by Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s company Meta.<\/em> Instead, many companies have already existed in this space such as Decentraland, Cryptovoxels, The Sandbox, <\/em>and more. Museums such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art<\/em> and the Serpentine Galleries <\/em>have already established their own virtual spaces when the pandemic drove them to go online. <\/span><\/p>\n

Through the metaverse, artists are able to create multi-sensory visceral artworks that blend visual, auditory, temporal, and spatial realms. Artworks not only move but exist in a dimension that lives on wherever or whenever the viewer may be. While this technology is in its early stages and the implications for using it are not entirely clear, many stakeholders of the art industry see the opportunity behind it. In fact, the Serpentine Galleries<\/em> which have teamed up with KAWS<\/em> and the massively popular battle-royale-styled online game, Fornite<\/em>\u2019s metaverse platform,  Fortnite Creative<\/em> shows the growing interest of the art industry in the metaverse.<\/span><\/p>\n

With this in mind, some artists have chosen to create their own pocket universe that is independent of the control of big tech. This includes implications of the carbon output they create as well as how payments and creative freedom are managed. <\/span><\/p>\n

Interactive designer, augmented reality producer, and comic book artist, Sutu created his own metaverse, the Sutuverse<\/em> to push the boundaries of the technology and take his art into the future. He began by creating the NEONz <\/em>NFT collection which is a limited collection of 10,000 futuristic moving avatars with cyberpunk gear. The NEONz<\/em> world is then brought into AR where collectors can display these interactive dynamic works in reality. It is the stepping stone to his expanded metaverse, which will further use VR and gaming to expand the rich narratives that the artist will create. In the Sutuverse,<\/em> users will be able to become their avatars to explore and immerse themselves in an alternate dimension of interactive gaming art.<\/span><\/p>\n
